THE PRESERVATION
ORDINANCE
The Historic Preservation Commission of McHenry County was created by ordinance, and is
governed and guided by that ordinance in its regular operations. This set of rules gives us guidelines for how to
organize our officers, how we run our meetings, and how we conduct business with the public and other
organizations.
The Ordinance is presented HERE in PDF format. We urge all interested citizens to download and read
this important document.
THE PRESERVATION PLAN
Goal 1: "Landmark and
Preserve"
Goal 2: "Foster Municipal
Cooperation"
Goal 3: "Cultivate Public
Knowledge"
Goal 4: "Maintain the Character of the County
Through Cooperation with Developers
Goal 5: "Promote Economic

"The Commission shall...become thoroughly familiarized with buildings, structures, objects, sites,
districts, areas and lands within the County which may be eligible for designation as historic landmarks or
districts and prepare an "Historic Landmark and District Preservation Plan." This quote, taken directly from
the Preservation Ordinance, was the Commission's first order of business after its inception.
The Preservation Plan is presented HERE in PDF form, in
its entirety. Please take a moment and look it over. It is a basic roadmap of how to save our County's cultural and
historic heritage.
